Island of The Spirits
Spirits are everywhere in Bali. Trees, temples, mountains, stones, water appear sacred to the Balinese, all serving as a hand reaching out and into the other world of ancestors and gods and the maelstrom of good and evil. Balinese spiritual culture has its roots in Indian Hinduism, Buddhism and ancient animist beliefs, first originating in East Java. Centuries-old ceremonies with deeply layered rituals are very much alive today. Island of the Spirits is a visual journey on Balinese spirituality photographed during the five years I lived in Bali, creating this reportage through the uninhibited and timeless lens of a Holga. Each image is a moment from decades past, transcending the temporal as they live on today and into the unforeseen future. This body of work stresses the historicity of spiritual life of Bali, consisting of deeply layered B&W imagery, witnessed, understood, a faith and culture as nowhere else on earth ~ John Stanmeyer

24 Windows
24 Windows is a meditation of 75-days in self-isolation during the heaviest days of COVID-19. Willingly, to avoid being a conduit of the virus, turning down assignments, I photographed each day through one of 24 windows, each representing the view of my world from within and through a 120-year-old house left in disrepair by its previous inhabitants. The home representing neglect we’ve done to ourselves and our earth, the outer world that holds promise for a better future. With written diaries that connect all of these moments that have altered our entire universe, 24 Windows is the beauty and pain that still exists, where in darkness there still is light ~ John Stanmeyer
